Gilles Cormier, acting dean of the College of Engineering at Al-Faisal University, told Arab News that many local projects are being supervised by foreign engineers. “We target Saudi students in engineering, but there are not enough Saudi engineering graduates for the job market,” he said.
He said that engineering is a multi-disciplinary field that provides tremendous edge in the job market. “The demand for engineers in Saudi Arabia has increased and many companies are looking for good engineers,” he said.
Cormier said that engineering jobs are now evolving in the Kingdom to provide digital innovation across industries. Saudis need more education before being put to face to actual challenges of being engineers.
“Al-Faisal University also offers five undergraduate engineering programs, including architectural, electrical, industrial, mechanical and software engineering, which are highly demanded in the Saudi market,” he added.
He said that members of Al-Faisal University, who work for some of the most prominent companies and government organizations, provide valuable input to the students to ensure that local market needs are met.

“Saudi Arabia is a virgin market with many business and investment opportunities. Many giant projects are under construction including the GCC railway, the GCC power grid and Jazan Economic City. All these projects will require at least four million new foreign workers in the coming years,” Siddeek Ahmed, CMD of Eram Group, told Arab News.
He commended the Saudi government’s efforts to correct the status of foreign workers and hoped the July 3 amnesty deadline would be extended to help more workers legalize their status. Thousands of expatriates have pinned their hopes that a royal decree would be issued by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to extend the deadline. “An extension will help not only foreign workers but also Saudi companies and businesses that are looking for experienced hands,” Ahmed said.
He pointed out that the newly licensed recruitment companies are authorized to recruit 100,000 foreign workers each. “The correction process as well as the newly established recruitment firms will strengthen the labor market,” he said, adding that they would ensure adequate supply of qualified and experienced workers.
Ahmed’s Eram Group currently employs about 13,000 workers including a substantial number of Saudis. There are 38 companies under the group with businesses spread in 14 countries.
