The healthcare and medical equipment industries in the Middle East and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are set for a robust growth rate in the next few years, especially as countries in the region have announced massive plans to build hospitals and advanced medical centers, in addition to expanding their current facilities.
Speaking at a press conference held recently, Ziyad Neil bin Issa, general manager of Agfa HealthCare Solutions in the Middle East, said that the medical equipment market is experiencing growth driven by several factors such as population growth, urbanization, an increase in government healthcare investments, initiatives and strategies, and the increasing prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and cancer.
The Saudi healthcare budget for 2013 reached $27.4 billion and is expected to achieve remarkable growth in the coming years to reach $47.7 billion by 2017.
The Kingdom announced a massive plan to increase the number of hospitals around the Kingdom and incorporate a healthcare digitization plan to help exchange patient information across the country with the aim of providing better health care services to patients wherever they are located and whenever they need it.
Agfa HealthCare Solutions recently hosted a gala dinner for top-tier healthcare professionals at the Belgian Embassy in Riyadh in the presence of the Belgian Ambassador Marc Vinck and Christian Reinaudo, CEO and president of Agfa Gevaert Group, the Belgium-headquartered parent company of Agfa HealthCare Solutions, in addition to a group of dignitaries.

Bahrain’s Al-Areen project is renewing its momentum with an upgrade of existing hospitality and leisure infrastructure, and the introduction of new facilities.
Senior executives from Al-Areen Holding Company made this announcement at an investors’ seminar held at Al-Areen’s Client Relations Center.
Esam Janahi, representing the owners, unveiled a partnership with US firm Avenue Ventures (AV) — who have completed global transactions valued at $ 15 billion — to acquire a 35 percent stake in Al Areen Holding Company.
AV will be a key partner in upgrading the existing hospitality and leisure facilities, and will also advise on the development of new facilities and components.
Robert W. Sweeney, senior executive vice president of Avenue Ventures, and General Wesley Clark, retired US Army officer, adviser to AV, and former US Presidential candidate and NATO Supreme Allied Commander, were present at the seminar and endorsed the partnership, while also praising excellent relations between Bahrain and the US.
Esam Janahi said the new partnership represents significant foreign direct investment for Bahrain, in a particularly challenging economic climate.
As part of the investment in Al-Areen City, they will offer advisory expertise and internationally renowned professionals to further enhance the quality of the development.
This will enhance the vision of Al-Areen to provide the highest standards of master development and facility management services to sub-developers.
During the seminar, Janahi said existing facilities will be enhanced by the refurbishment of the Al-Areen Palace and Spa Hotel and the addition of a Clinical Spa and Spa Therapy Training Center, purpose-built and managed by an international operator.
The Lost Paradise of Dilmun (LPOD) Water Park will be upgraded by the addition of an interactive educational component, new rides and other attractions all under a new operator. It was also announced that a key component of the Al-Areen City development will be a new specialized medical center.
In addition to the medical center, new components of the development will include an organic village to provide locally grown produce to the Kingdom’s consumers whilst training a new generation of Bahraini entrepreneurs.
At the same time, Al-Areen’s existing facilities will be modified to bring them into line with environmental best practices, including solar energy for all installations, advanced wastewater treatment plants and the associated production of biogas.
All of these initiatives are expected to attract considerable interest from local and regional visitors, and further details on these two newly introduced components will be announced in the near future.
General Clark emphasized the positive message this new investment sends to the Bahraini market.
He said: “After years of economic and social challenges globally and locally, an investment of this magnitude by a well-established American company in this project at this time shows that the project will realize its long term viability.”
He added: “It also reaffirms the continued attractiveness of Bahrain as a gateway destination for investment capital which will contribute to the future growth prospects of the region as a whole.”
Following the briefing and a tour of the facilities, Janahi said: “In the current financial climate, it is heartening to see that foreign direct investment can still be achieved, mirroring the model we introduced years ago with foreign investors injecting private equity into in Bahrain.”
Janahi added: “Al-Areen City will not only bring international operators into the country but will also create jobs for hundreds of Bahrainis, and enhance the South of the island as a leisure and tourism destination.”
Robert Sweeney of AV said: “We welcome this exciting investment opportunity in the further development of Al-Areen City.”
He added: “We feel that our expertise in similar developments abroad can add value to the development with its leisure, hospitality and residential offerings. Plans are already in place for the development’s upgrade and we look forward to being part of the announcement of further details in the coming months.”

After the completion of a SR 35 million refurbishment project, the Mubarak Hospital, described as one of the most modern health care facilities in the capital city, has officially reopened its doors for patients, following the permission given by the Ministry of Health (MOH).

This new state-of-the-art private hospital located in the city center of Riyadh has currently 94 beds in operation spread across different specialties, including 13 high-tech beds at the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU).

The hospital, which went through a complete makeover, including new flooring, was formally inaugurated by Shaikh Abdul Mohasin Ali Al-Mubarak, chairman of Mubarak Hospital, yesterday. Bassam Ibrahim Al-Yahya, head of the hospital division at the MOH, and Abdul Rahman Al-Yousaf, another senior MOH official besides a large number of doctors, paramedical staff, businessmen and guests attended the ceremony.

Nassar Al-Asseeri, administration director of the hospital, said the facility will introduce a “novel concept of health care in which patients will be given best treatment at the lowest possible cost.” The hospital doors are open for Saudi citizens and expatriates alike. The hospital has five major operating theaters along with a CT scan unit, high-resolution MRI machine and incubators besides all other world-class medical gadgets.

In addition, the hospital has sprawling internal courtyards, and has a large concourse/entrance area with waiting and children’s play areas, a cafe and shop. Asseeri added that the hospital is one of the few private sector health care facilities, which will have full-fledged clinics for patients suffering from psychiatric problems and urological disorders.

Mubarak Hospital is already negotiating with several medical insurance companies, which will ensure health care accessibility to their cardholders. Briefing the press, the hospital’s Operation Manager Shahsa Hassan Ali, said: “We are delighted to open this state-of-the-art facility.” She added that the hospital will shortly embark on an expansion plan under which 20 to 30 beds will be added to the existing facility.

The hospital has already hired more than 50 top-notch Saudi and expatriate doctors. “About 20 doctors from Pakistan and more than nine from India will arrive in Riyadh within a few weeks from now,” she said and pointed out that the hospital offers specialties of cardiology, dermatology, diabetics, digestive system, internal and infectious diseases, a kidney and urology unit, neurology, a psychiatry clinic, lung and rheumatic diseases.

It also includes a general surgery unit, an orthopedic unit, and an ENT clinic. The hospital, she said, has a modern gynecology clinic, a pediatric department, and a dentistry unit besides a number of support departments. The hospital has its own pharmacy for providing patients with medicines prescribed by specialist physicians and provision of services corresponding to applicable drug precautions and professional regulations.

Prominent among the guests present at the inauguration included Khalid Al-Dakeelullah Al-Khathami, Mohammed Luthfy Abdudawood, Nasser Al-Aseeri, Faisal Al-Mubarak, Shahsa Hassan Ali, Shaheem Mohammed Unni, regional director of Lulu Hypermarkets, Shaji Aripra, Ashraf Venghat, V.M.

JEDDAH: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has ordered the construction of two medical cities in Riyadh and Jeddah under the Ministry of Interior, Interior Minister Prince Muhammad bin Naif announced yesterday.

“King Abdullah’s gesture reflects his care for the security officers and their families,” the minister said, adding that the two medical cities would provide specialized health services to all citizens in the Kingdom. Prince Muhammad said the two medical cities, with advanced facilities and specialist doctors, would receive patients transferred from other hospitals including the ministry’s hospitals in different parts of the country.

“There is a plan to establish a network of hospitals under the ministry as part of efforts to provide integrated medical services,” the prince said. “The two medical cities in Riyadh and Jeddah were planned to provide specialized health services to the ministry’s staff and security officers,” he added.

In a related development, an 800-bed hospital will be established at Taibah University in Madinah. Higher Education Minister Khaled Al-Anqari has signed a contract to implement the hospital project. He said the new hospital would be established on an area of 46,600 sq. meters. “If we consider the space on its different floors, the total area of the hospital will reach 221,500 sq. meters,” the rector said. The hospital will be located on King Abdul Aziz Road, east of Madinah. In the first phase, it will contain 400 beds, which will be increased to 800 in the second phase. “The university hospital will have all the clinics, in addition to nursing and educational facilities, operation rooms and laboratories,” Al-Mazroue said. The building will have eight floors in addition to a ground floor and a mezzanine floor. It will have 750 doctors and teaching staff, 2,350 students, 475 nurses, 800 patients, 700 administrators and workers, 2,850 visitors and will have a capacity to hold more than 10,000 people.

The Health Services Council will implement various health plan components over the next five years in every region of the Kingdom. This project is an initiative of the National Center for Health Information, whose establishment the Cabinet recently approved. The plans would increase the clinical capacity of public hospitals by 60 percent in many regions, while making sure that each region has its own health scheme regarding the adjustment in the number and quality of hospital beds.

Field surveys indicated that Riyadh and Jeddah are most in need of an increase in hospital beds. The National Center for Health Information will be linked with the Health Services Council and will be connected with the Ministry of Health, medical services in the military, university hospitals, and other related institutions. The center will be the main institution for the provision, organization and exchange of information among health bodies.

It will create a unified electronic health file for each patient by electronically linking medical records in various health sectors, including hospitals and community health centers. The center will collect and set up research data on common diseases and epidemics in coordination with relevant authorities.
