Saudi Ministry of Transport |
| The function of this Ministry (formerly Ministry of Communications) is to undertake the design, building and maintenance of the Kingdom’s network of roads. The Ministry is also responsible for the co-ordination of all surface transport, including bus services and railways.In keeping pace with the progress achieved in other sectors in the Kingdom, the transportation sector has witnessed amazing changes during the last few decades. As the material resources of the Kingdom have grown in recent years, the role of transportation has continued to expand. This sector has played a key role in the overall development of the Kingdom’s economy and has had a significant impact on the lives of the Kingdom’s citizens.In addition to the vastness of the Kingdom, Saudi Arabia is characterized by extremes of climate and geography ranging from high, rugged mountain ranges to rocky plains and vast deserts of sand. In carrying out its vital assignment, the Ministry has had to deal with the complex problems caused by such extremes. |

| The Ministry for Municipal and Rural Affairs, which was established in 1975 (1395 AH), is responsible for the administration of the municipalities throughout the Kingdom. Its primary functions include city and town planning, and the development and maintenance of the basic infrastructure, such as roads, town cleaning and hygiene. |

| Rail transport is a vital support to growth and development in any country. While the Saudi economy is the largest in the Middle East and one of the world’s 25 largest, the size and expanse of the Kingdom’s rail transport does not match that nor does it mach the promising potential of the national economy.
SRO is working very hard to provide the best services possible within the current operational structure. However, the Saudi Government, realizing the value rail transport adds to national development, had launched a number of initiatives to bring this vital service up to bar with the developmental needs of the country. These initiatives include major expansion projects to connect the Western Regions of the Kingdom with the Eastern Region, the Northern with the Central and to link the Holy Places as well. The developmental initiatives also include moving towards privatizing SRO and opening the door for national and foreign investments in it to pollster its ability to support national development.. We in SRO take these initiatives very seriously and are working diligently to turn the wise strategic vision of our government into realty, because we understand and can actually see the abundant benefits our nation will reap from it. |

| Due to the high importance of Arriyadh as the political and historical capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a high planning Commission has been established for developing the city in all economic, social, cultural, architectural and environmental aspects. The commission is responsible also for drawing policies and procedures aiming at raising the efficiency of services and facilities connected with raising the living standard of citizens and their welfare.The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh and its executive branch, Arriyadh Development Authority, have been established by virtue of the resolution of the Council of Ministers No. 717 issued on 28/5/1394H. Other regulations and rules were formulated stating its developmental and planning role by the resolution of the Minister of Interior No 4/212 issued on 20/1/1395 H. These regulations allow for high degree of flexibility in administration and financing and wide range of powers and jobs. |
